What to Do If Your eSIM Won't Connect After Landing

Landed and no signal? Here's a quick, no-panic troubleshooting guide to get your eSIM connected fast, wherever you are.

What to Do If Your eSIM Won't Connect After Landing

You've just stepped off a long flight, you're tired, and the first thing you want is your phone to work so you can call a cab, check directions, or message someone that you've arrived safely. Instead, you're staring at "No Service." Don't worry — this happens more often than you'd think, and it's almost always fixable in a few minutes.

Here's a simple checklist to run through before you assume the worst.

1. Check Airplane Mode and Data Settings

It sounds obvious, but it's the number one culprit. Turn off Airplane Mode if it's still on, then wait 30-60 seconds for your phone to search for a network. Next, double-check that:

On iPhone, this is under Settings > Cellular > your eSIM plan. On Android, it's usually Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. A surprising number of "broken" eSIMs are simply set to the wrong line.

2. Manually Select the Network

Sometimes your phone picks a weak or incompatible local carrier automatically. Go into your network settings and switch from Automatic to Manual, then pick a different available network from the list. If one partner network doesn't work well, another often does. After switching, give it a minute or two to register — connecting to a new tower isn't always instant.

3. Restart Your Phone

A full restart (not just toggling Airplane Mode) resets your phone's connection to nearby cell towers and clears out minor software hiccups. This single step solves a surprising number of "my eSIM isn't working" cases, especially right after landing when your phone is switching from one country's network grid to another.

4. Confirm Your Plan Has Actually Started

Most travel eSIMs activate the moment they detect a supported network in your destination country — not the moment you installed them. If you installed your eSIM weeks before your trip, it's possible the data session hasn't kicked in yet. Check your eSIM provider's app or confirmation email to see if your plan shows as "active" or "pending." If it's still pending, give it a few extra minutes after landing, since the activation trigger depends on catching a live signal.

5. Double-Check APN Settings

Occasionally, phones need a manual APN (Access Point Name) entry to complete the data connection, especially on Android devices or older models. Your eSIM provider should supply these details in their setup guide or app — it's usually just a couple of fields to fill in once, and then it's saved permanently.

6. Reach Out for Support

If you've gone through all of the above and you're still not connecting, it's time to contact your eSIM provider's support team. Have ready: your device model, destination country, and a screenshot of your cellular settings. A good support team can usually diagnose the issue in minutes, whether it's a network-specific glitch, a plan activation issue, or a settings fix they can walk you through.

Travel Smart, Stay Connected

Landing in a new country should feel exciting, not stressful. A few quick checks — Airplane Mode, manual network selection, a restart, and confirming activation — solve the vast majority of connection issues within minutes.

At Arivia SIM, we design our eSIMs to activate smoothly and connect to reliable local networks the moment you land, and our support team is always just a message away if something doesn't go as planned.
